We decided to make it into a trilogy to keep people interested in the game and get it to players sooner. Why not just make one complete game from the start? Developing all three parts of the game could take some time and as an indie developer we can't afford to fund a 2-year development cycle. The decisions you make and characters you build in Chapter 1 of the game will carry over into the other chapters of the game. Depending on how much we raise during this campaign the length of the game will vary. Our goal is that when all chapters are complete, each game will both stand on their own, AND form a fantastic and cohesive whole, like any great series of books, movies, or games.Ĭhapter 1 of the game will not be a short 2-hour fling. We don't yet have a timeline for the full trilogy, as our first priority is to complete Chapter 1 of The Banner Saga and see where that takes us! In terms of a larger story arc, it represents the first part of a three-part trilogy that has already been planned out. The Banner Saga as it exists in this Kickstarter will be a complete story in its own right. What's the difference between Chapter 1 and the full game? (long version) It's a shame because it actively makes me dislike the rest of the game, even though I was enjoying it up until the last 30 minutes. I'm actually in disbelief at how poorly this game ends. The whole thing is "monsters arrive, you try to survive for a while, your daughter dies." There's no resolution whatsoever. There was no real story arc that I can think of. WTF? It made me question what the point of the game even was. Then I watched them give this character a viking funeral in a flaming boat, still excited to see where the story goes from here, but then. One of your characters dies in the battle and the conversation between two of the main characters literally goes: I finally beat him, and I'm excited to see where the story goes. So I'm struggling through this boss fight, which has a preposterously high difficulty spike, and is just not fun or creative at all. In my mind, I was like "cool, so this is like the middle point of the game where you seemingly beat the villain and buy yourself some time, but then some twist happens and you launch into the second half of the game, yadda yadda yadda." The main villain has all of you trapped in this town with no escape and you're forced to fight him. Then near the end they finally converge and the story seems to be really picking up. The whole game, you're controlling two different parties, alternating back and forth between them every other chapter. So I was playing The Banner Saga the last week or two, and for the most part I was really enjoying it! However, once I reached the end of the game, my jaw dropped in disbelief- and not in a good way.
